🌍 Madagascar: From Paradise to Hell in One Hour 🔥🌿

As I left Île Sacrée, a serene island community thriving without cars, police, or traditional power grids—powered entirely by solar energy and an abundance of food—I was struck by its harmony and simplicity. Yet, flying over the mainland of Madagascar, I witnessed a devastating reality that shook me to my core.

For one full hour, I watched thick smoke rise from countless man-made fires. This is the heartbreaking aftermath of tavy—slash-and-burn farming—that destroys nearly 1 million acres of forest every year. Madagascar has already lost 44% of its forests, and with over 70% of the population living in poverty, communities are forced to rely on destructive practices for survival. Despite decades of efforts, NGOs and governments have not made a meaningful difference in curbing this destruction. The system remains broken, and the devastation continues.

Madagascar, the world’s fourth-largest island, is home to over 200,000 species, with 90% found nowhere else. Its lush forests, vibrant coastlines, and unique wildlife make it a global biodiversity hotspot. But without change, this biodiversity—and the livelihoods tied to it—will be lost.

It’s time to do what decades of effort have failed to achieve. 🌱 We need real, sustainable economies—investments in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and ecotourism that create lasting opportunities for the people of Madagascar. Without this shift, the destruction will continue, and Madagascar’s incredible future will burn with it.

The time for action is now. Madagascar deserves better.

Africa, home to over 1.4 billion people and a GDP exceeding $3 trillion, holds immense potential. Yet, millions still struggle for stable energy, and middle-income opportunities remain limited across the continent.

For the past decade, I’ve been privileged to work with African leaders, deploying technology to bridge these gaps.
